Cautions:

Do one thing at a time!

Either get your Satellite connection up and working properly and then install your LAN or vice versa. Troubleshooting is much easier if you are only working on one thing at a time

DO NOT RUN Cat5 or 5e cable parallel to or in close proximity of electrical wire, fluorescent lights or fixtures, copying machines, computer monitors, TV sets, power supplies, UPS units, electric heaters, speakers, printers, RF antennas or transmission lines, any kind of electric motors like refrigerator compressor motors, dishwashing machine motors, microwave ovens or anything else that can introduce Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI).
When cutting back the outer sheath of the Cat5 cable be careful not to nick the wires. If nicked, start over. Once wire is nicked, it will soon break.
When pulling the cable, do not exceed 25lbs of pressure.
Never make bends tighter than 4 times the width of the Cat5 cable (minimum 1 inch bends) or a minimum of 5 inch bends on Cat5e cable.
Do not use Cat3 RJ45 Jack Modules on Cat5 cable
Do not use metal staples or insulated metal cable clips to secure Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables. Use plastic.
Avoid running UTP cables on the outside of your building.
If plastic ties are necessary to keep cables neat, never cinch them so tight that they crush the outer sheath of the cable. Always tag each cable with some sort of identification tag.
Never strip away more of the cable sheath then necessary. Cable manufactures take special care to have a certain amount of twists per foot of cable to maintain the minimum amount of resistance, maximum bandwidth and minimum cross talk between pairs.
Do not re-twist cable ends once they have been untwisted. This can cause "near end" cross talk. Have cable sheath end as close to the RJ45 Jack Module as possible.
Never use extra, unused pairs for in house telephone system. This can cause a lot of cross talk./li>
Never have any kind of knots or kinks in your cable or heavy objects lying on your UTP cable.

Maximum Cable Lengths Category 5 or 5e UTP cable

10/100/Mbs: 328 feet (100 meters) for 10/100. Industry standards for a commercial installation are 195 feet (90 meters).
82 feet (25 meters) for 1000BaseTX UTP, Cat5 cable
328 feet of Cat5e cable for 1000BaseTX UTP cable operating at 350MHz. Here again, 90 meters is industry standard.

Patch Cords
Industry standard is no more than 9 feet between wall plate and device.

Special NOTE: Patch cables longer than 9 feet may be used in a home network, but the shorter is better.
